Browns Bar and Brasserie – It may be a chain but it’s a top quality one!

Ok, so Browns is a chain and as a rule, I prefer the independent restaurants which have something individual and unique about them but having eaten at Browns twice since it opened in Cardiff, I just can’t fault it! Browns is on The Friary where Haha’s used to be which is a perfect location. It’s in the centre of town without being immediately in the Saturday night chaos but close enough to a whole host of bars and the shops and theatre.
To promote the new restaurant, Browns gave away a two course meal to those who booked a table for their preview night. I featured the deal on my blog and managed to book a table for two. We had a fantastic night. We were greeted by a host and showed to our table where we were then introduced to our waitress. We were told that all staff were new and to bare this in mind but they all did a great job. There was a slight overkill on the amount of staff pacing the floor and checking how our meals were but this was certainly better than being ignored and waiting three hours to be served.
I have to say, the food was top quality. I chose the Crab and Avocado Stack to start and my fiance had Smoked Beef. Both were lovely. For our mains we had the Haunch of Venison and Rib Eye Steak. The steak was perfect, rare like we asked for and so tender and juicy, I couldn’t get enough. The venison was perfectly nice. The only complaint I have is that I asked for it rare and it was well done.
The decor in Browns is great. It has a french feel with some lovely lighting, wooden features and simple table displays. The staff are very smart in long clean white aprons. I have to say, I was very impressed. The food wasn’t cheap but it is worth the price. The cocktails are very nice too. Browns have managed to create a dining experience that feels upmarket but is in no way pretentious.
On a second visit to Browns with a group of friends I had some exceptional service. As a large party, we sat in the bar area to start with as some planned to eat and some didn’t but we hadn’t actually booked a table. When it came to ordering food, our waiter Preeyan went out of his way to make sure that we could stay sitting in the bar area rather than break up our party or keep us waiting for a table and moved tables to accommodate us. He was always nearby to collect drink orders and recommended drinks to us. He was extremely professional but also very friendly and down to earth. We were not the easiest party to work with but he did an excellent job and was very patient. The food was great on this visit too. I had a goats cheese and pea risotto which was delicious.
I highly recommend Browns for a place to eat in Cardiff. It may be a chain but it is a good one, serving quality food with a quality service. I will be back!
