1 Malaysia- Once Was Enough
When I heard that there was a new Malaysian restaurant in Cardiff Town Centre I was quite excited. I love Asian food and I thought it would be a great addition to our many restaurants. Unfortunately, I built it up in my mind and it wasn’t as good as I had hoped.
1 Malaysia is on Trinity Street which is a very good location and when we were there, it seemed to be attracting passers-by from the busy streets. We were greeted by a very friendly man, shown to our seats, and presented with a menu. All good so far. The menu was quite extensive and there were some unusual dishes that I was dying to try.
I started with the Rojak Salad which sounded fantastic- noodles, prawn fritters, potatoes, cucumbers, deep-fried bean curd, bean sprouts, topped with a boiled egg. I wasn’t thrilled with the presentation when it arrived with a splatter of shredded iceberg lettuce and a tiny bit of cucumber on the side as a garnish. If it had tasted great, it would have have been saved. However, the flavour of the bean curd was nice but it was a hot sauce on top of cold cucumber and uncooked bean sprouts mixed in with the hot fritters and an egg just chucked on top. It was a very bizarre combination. Our main courses were better but were still very average. I had the Beef Rengdang which was very dry. There wasn’t much sauce but the meat was tender. My partner Ben had a noodle dish which was uninspiring and unattractive to look at.
The service could have been better too. There was no consistency. We were served by four different people. Our waiter tried to take our order three times in about three minutes and when we weren’t ready he didn’t come back. While this was going on, someone else was taking our drinks order. Eventually we were served by a waitress who took our food order. It arrived quickly served by person number 4 (a very friendly man). Despite all these people, we had to wait a long time for our bill to arrive and when it did, it was wrong.
I’m sorry to say that I wouldn’t go back to 1 Malaysia unless I had heard it had improved. It’s a shame because it could be lovely as it is in a great location, the prices are very good and food arrives promptly. Unfortunately, with so much competition in Cardiff, there are better places to go.
