Hello lovely followers, I’m writing to ask you a favour. I need your vote!

I will be eternally grateful to anyone who votes for me. You need a Twitter account to vote and it’s a very simple process. Just click on the link below and scroll down to the entries. Click on my entry (number 5) and that’s it!

Voting closes on Thursday 30th at midnight.

Thanks in advance.

Cupcake Week 2012: Who Makes The Most Beautiful Cupcakes?

To celebrate cupcake week 2012, I am going to create a cupcake gallery of beautiful handmade cupcakes. Whether you are a professional baker or a keen amateur, whatever your age or your style, I need pictures of your cakes.

All you need to do is send me your photo, your name, the name of your cake and a link to your website or social media page if you have one to be included.

I will feature all of the cakes in the gallery and then I will shortlist the best and put it to you to vote for Your Last Mouthful’s Most Beautiful Cupcake 2012.

You have until the Friday 21st September to send me your cakes. Please email them to me at

Get decorating!

There are going to be some changes around here…

I would like to start by thanking everyone who reads my blog, everyone who has subscribed and all of my followers on Twitter and Facebook.  I am very grateful for the support and input with the blog.

As you will know, I also have a website- which the blog feeds into. The website and the blog are similar and currently both feature reviews of local food businesses in Cardiff as well as news from events that we have been to.

The website is doing very well but there is a lot of ‘doubling up’ so I have decided to make some changes…

The Website

Nothing will change with the website. If you are looking for reviews on food businesses in Cardiff and a list of the best, the website is where you need to be! The website is run by myself and my husband (Mr V) and we have a small team of reviewers. We have a ‘Green Spoon Directory’ where we list all of the businesses that have been reviewed and received a green spoon. We also have articles on the latest foodie events that we have attended, foodie news and anything local to Cardiff along with a monthly competition and exclusive deals.

You can subscribe to the website to get regular updates similar to those you receive from the blog via the home page or by emailing ‘subscribe’ to

The Blog

Historically this blog has been specific to Cardiff and largely made up of reviews. I have a passion for all things food related and I feel that just writing about Cardiff is restrictive so going forward the blog will cast the net a lot wider and will include reviews from anywhere I visit as well as recipes, informative pieces and general food related ramblings.

I hope that you will continue to subscribe to the blog and to the website as well.

The Great Roath Bake Off!

Last weekend, I was very happy to be a judge at the extremely successful Great Roath Bake Off! After meeting organiser Wayne Courtney at an event recently, I was thrilled to be asked to be involved and it really was a fantastic event and one that I would love to be involved in again.

Leading up to the event, there was quite a lot of hype on Twitter and Facebook but I had very little idea how popular the event was going to be and how many people were going to enter so when I arrived on Saturday to endless streams of people bringing in their baking creations I was shocked!

The event was held at The Coffi House in Roath. Organiser Wayne Courtney raves about this quaint little cafe and it is often the venue of choice for other events he holds to promote independent businesses and causes in Roath. I can see why. The owners and staff were lovely and the Coffi House was perfect for this type of event as it is so laid back and the whole evening had such a wonderful friendly community feel.

I watched eagerly as the cakes and bakes continued to pour through the doors until there was nowhere left to put them. The place was packed to the point where some people just couldn’t get in! My fellow judges and I (Sarah from the Cakehouse, Matt from, and student journalist Emma Gilbertson) took our seats and the competition began!

A selection of the cakes and bakes

We judged on three categories: Taste, Presentation and Originality. With 35 entries in total, there was a lot to eat! There was a real mixture to work through from a beautifully decorated cake resembling The Coffi House, some prawn canapes (someone misunderstood what baking is), pasties, cupcakes, a ‘penis cake’, tarts and many many cakes. Some were delicious and some not so…

The Coffi House Cake

We picked three winners with first place taking the money from the entries and the raffle. We also awarded a special prize to 6 year old Silas who impressed us with his ‘weird cake’ which was smothered in chocolate and green on the inside. Very creative!

And the winners were……..

THIRD PLACE– Stefanie Lehman – Pineapple Praline Creme Torte.

This lovely cake gave us some much needed freshness after eating so many cakes. It was beautifully sweet and moist but also fresh thanks to the pineapple.

Third place- Pineapple Praline Creme Torte

SECOND PLACE- Lisa Watts – Sticky Toffee Walnut Tart

For me this one was very close to being a winner. I liked it because it was different so it really stood out. The walnuts went beautifully with the toffee in what is traditionally more likely to be a toffee and pecan tart. Lovely!

FIRST PLACE- Kate Lloyd Hughes – Earl Grey infused Chocolate Cake

Kate’s cake was a unanimous winner. It was one of the first ones we tried but it stuck in our minds. The subtle tea went beautifully with the chocolate and the moist cake was baked very well. A lovely cake.

Wayne Courtney

All in all this was a fantastic event. Wayne Courtney certainly has a knack for this kind of thing and I hope he does it again next year. Wayne will be the first to tell you that he doesn’t cook and prefers eating out so this really wasn’t something he would usually do but he was a fantastic host and organiser. There were also some great decorations from Crafty Cakes. It was a wonderful thing to see a community come together and to have such a range of people attend. I might even enter myself next year!

COMPETITION! Win a box of delicious Brownie Boo Brownies!

Following the success of my Pieminister competition, I have another one for you! This time you can win a box of delicious brownies posted straight to your door by Brownie Boo.

I was lucky enough to sample some of these last week and they are seriously good! Arriving beautifully packaged in a box and wrapped in pink paper, these would make a lovely present for someone. They taste fantastic too. They have the essential soft and moist inside which is important in any brownie but these go a step further as they are so squidgy and chocolatey.

Brownie Boo deliver all over the UK with Free Delivery and they are a great alternative to sending flowers. Not only are they at a much more reasonable price point than a bouquet of flowers, which in the current times is really important, but they are also great for sharing, so perfect for the whole family. They can be sent for birthdays, to say thank you to friends for a great weekend, to say sorry for a bereavement and congratulations to a family welcoming a new baby as well as much more. They are great for any age, male and female alike.

So how about winning a box?

Tweet and Eat competition – Winners review!

If you haven’t entered one of my Tweet and Eat Competitions yet, keep your eyes open for the next one. Here is a review from one of my winners. Hannah entered my Tweet and Eat competition in association with Angel’s Cakes. Here’s what she won.

Hannah says:

I recently won my choice of a Giant Cupcake from the wonderful blog Your Last Mouthful.  I’ve been a fan of the blog pretty much since it started so I was super happy to have won one of her wonderful competitions!  My prize was to be made by Angel Cakes UK , a Cardiff Bay based company run by a lovely lady called Angela.

I was told I didn’t have to use the prize straight away and that I could save it for a special occasion, which was perfect as my boyfriend’s birthday was coming up in September.  To celebrate we were going to New York so I called Angela with an idea of a Big Apple themed cake being made for our return.

That was literally the extent of my ideas and I left it totally in her control to come up with whatever she could think of!

WOW! did she deliver!  I received a HUGE cupcake filled with vanilla sponge, strawberry jam, cream AND Rolos, Minstrels and other yummy goodies!  She had come up with a brilliant idea of putting Hershey’s chocolate in the middle to continue with the USA theme but unfortunately I can’t bear the taste!   Awesome idea though!

The decoration was amazing!!  The Giant cupcake was intricately iced with blue, white and red stars and spangled with edible glitter!  Surrounding the cake was a personalised birthday message, a Yankee’s shirt, a big apple (geddit?) and an American flag.

The cake came wrapped in a mass of cellophane and a huge bow – the perfect gift!

Last but not least all I can say was the taste was divine!!!  The sponge was so soft and tasty and although there was a lot of icing it wasn’t too much because it was the buttery kind which melts in your mouth.

I’m definitely going to be getting a cake from Angela at Angel Cakes UK again.  Thanks Your Last Mouthful!

There are lots of competitions planned for the new year so make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss out!
