You’ve probably seen the posters and billboards all over Cardiff. This year’s Great Roath Bake Off is going to be huge!
Since starting in 2012, the bake off has grown and developed and this year it is set to be the best yet. With celebrity judges, more categories, live music, stalls and raffles, organiser Wayne Courtney has gone all out.
As well as the celebrities, I will also be judging again along with Sarah and Marie-Clare from The Cakehouse and Matt Appleby from Easyteas.
If you’d like to enter, The Great Roath Bake Off will take place on Saturday 12th April at St Andrew’s Church Hall at 11am.
As well as the main Bake Off, where there will be three categories: Best Cake, Best Bake (bread/pies) and Best Professional Cake, there is also a Junior Bake Off for under 16s.
Entry to each category is £3, with all proceeds going to charity.

Following last years success, organiser Wayne Courtney can be very proud that this year’s Great Roath Bake Off kicked last years backside!
With fellow judges, I chomped my way through almost 100 entries. I have never eaten so much cake! The standard of entries were high but the winning cake stood out above the rest.
Lisa Watts’ Chocolate Salted Caramel Crunch cake was my favourite by far. I clocked it before the judging began because it looked so delicious and it tasted even better than it looked. It scored very highly on all four of our judging criteria- taste, presentation, quality of bake and texture.
The savoury category was a welcome break from all the sugar and the winner was Bill Ward with his Pork Pie. Pork Pies don’t usually float my boat but this one was packed full of well seasoned meat and light and crispy pastry and was a clear winner for me.
There was also a Professional Bake category won by Nato & Co Portuguese with their Portuguese Tarts and a Children’s category won by Molly Spivey with her White chocolate, pomegranate and raspberry cake.
All in all a great day and I am honoured to have been asked to judge. Roll on next years event!

It’s that time of year again. The time of year I get to eat masses of cakes at Roath’s favourite food event; The Great Roath Bake Off!
Following the success of last year’s bake off at The Coffee House on Wellfield Road, organiser Wayne Courtney has plans to make this year’s event even bigger and better than last year. This time it will be held at St Andrew’s Church Hall and as well as the bake off there will be live music, refreshments and craft stalls.
I was a judge last year and I am very pleased to be invited back this year along with some familiar faces from last year and some new faces included BBC weather lady Sue Charles!
There are three categories this year:
Best Bake: Bread/Pie/Other
Best Bake/Cake Under 16′s
Entrants should bring their cake or bake to the venue by 1pm on the day, and you won’t need to fill in an entry form in advance. Entry is £3 per bake. A panel of expert judges (yes, that’s right, experts!…ish) will decide the winners of The Great Roath Bake Off 2013.
The Bake Off takes place on Saturday 6th April and is open to everyone. It’s such a fun day so bring your cakes and bakes down or just come along for an entertaining day out!

Following the success of the The Great Roath Bake Off where I was on the judging panel, I was thrilled to be asked back by the wonderful Wayne Courtney to judge the Spring Cake Off as part of the Made in Spring Festival in Roath.
Running from Friday to Tuesday last week, the Made in Spring Festival included music and film events, arts exhibitions and arts and crafts stalls with the Spring Cake Off taking place on the Sunday as part of the Roath Village Fiesta.
The Cake Off took place in the quirky Milkwood Gallery and there were 15 entries in total. Along with fellow judges Sarah and Marie-Clare from the delicious Cakehouse, Christian from the fabulous I loves the Diff, Tim Crowston and Allan Blair Beaton I got to work munching through the cakes.
We judged on taste, presentation and originality. There was a real mix in terms of quality including one bright spark who entered a Marks and Spencers cake! I didn’t come close to the top three which shows that home-baked is by far the best option!

After much deliberation, the top three cakes were revealed.
3rd Place: Gareth’s albino hedgehog cake
2nd place: Daniel’s lemon drizzle cake
1st place: Ann’s Easter Celebration Cake!
After the event everyone was free to tuck into the cakes and give suggestions to who they thought should win.
It was a fab event and I absolutely loved being a judge. Thank you so much Wayne for asking me to be involved again!
